- Your hardwood floor may initially feel slightly grainy
to the touch. This is caused by wood fibers that rise up
during the final coats (like the hair on your arms). This
is normal and should not be a concern. As you walk on the
floor, the friction created by your feet will create a
smooth surface.

Keep your floors free from
dirt and debris by sweeping regularly. Barnum Floors
carries a complete line of hardwood floor cleaner. We are
supplying you with the $30.00 starter kit FREE. Please
come to the showroom to redeem this complimentary gift. Do
Not use Murphy’s Oil, Endust, Pledge or other products
that have oil in them. Products with waxes, over time,
will compromise the finish on your floor and prevent
future polyurethane coats from sticking. Remember you are
cleaning polyurethane, not polishing wood!
-
Your hardwood flooring is
part of the permanent structure of your home. Wood is
susceptible to changes in temperatures and humidity. You
may find as seasons change, your wood flooring will expand
or contract depending on the humidity levels within your
home. The humidity level within your home should be kept
at 30-45% year around. Temperatures should be kept at
60-80°.
-
We recommend you place wool
furniture safe glides on all moving chairs that will be
placed on your new wood flooring. This helps protects the
flooring from dents and scratches in high traffic areas.
These can also be purchased at the Barnum Floors’ store.
To allow your finish to cure, we recommend you do not
place area rugs or throw rugs on your new flooring for at
least three [3] weeks.
-
Ongoing standing water can
be damaging to wood. Floors with a urethane finish are
resistant to the occasional spills of day-to-day living;
however, special care must be taken to prevent water from
“standing” on your hardwood floor. If water or other
liquid spills on your floor, wipe the spill with a cloth
or paper towel.
-
Furniture legs should be
capped with protective pads. These protective pads will
help prevent indentations caused by heavy furniture. They
also protect your floor from scratches caused by furniture
sliding over your floor. NEVER drag furniture or heavy
objects across wood flooring. Never put furniture on a rug
or cardboard and attempt to drag the furniture. Never pull
out refrigerator without taking necessary protective
precautions. Please feel free to call with questions or
concerns. Protective pads can be obtained from Barnum
Floors.

It is essential that high
heel shoes be kept in good repair. The weight per cubic
inch of a 125-lb. woman wearing high heel shoes is
approximately 2,000 lbs. If the rubber tip is missing, an
exposed nail will exert 8,000 lbs. of pressure per square
inch. Keep your shoes in good repair.
-
Use rugs anywhere potential
problems may occur such as in front of sinks, dishwashers,
and washing machines.
-
A dog approximately 30 lbs.
or more can severely scratch hardwood floors. Keep
toenails clipped regularly to help protect your wood
flooring finish.
-
Finally, remember, this is a
floor, not a fine table. Your hardwood floor will get
bumped, bruised & scratched. Don’t stress about the floor.
Make sure your furniture is protected properly and then
sit back and enjoy the ease of owning a hardwood floor.
